CHAIRMAN’S SHIELD
A good turnout of 28 players attended the Club on Sunday to compete in the third and final pairs competition of the season, The Chairman’s Shield.
Pairings for the Club’s doubles competitions are drawn at random and two of the strongly fancied pairs faced each other in the quarter-final, Margaret Langley and Ray Sutton eventually overcoming Bill Bloor and Tony Livesey 21-20. In the semi-final, Margaret and Ray went on to meet Eileen Curtis and Richard Rawcliffe, who had won two tricky games against Fred Mitchell and Joe Parker (21-17) and Jim Halsall and Eileen Rawcliffe (21-20). The semi-final was another tight affair with Margaret and Ray just winning 21-18 to reach the final.
The bottom half of the draw saw the very strong pair of Alan Bond and Jim Finnimore win through to the final with wins against Mark Eustace and Dorothy Mitchell, Janice Hobson and John Stennett and in the semi-final, one of last winners, Margaret Eustace and Chris Harding.
The final was expected to a close match and so it proved. Although Alan and Jim counted two at the first end, Ray and Margaret scored 3s at the 2nd and 8th ends and these turned out to be decisive. Holding a lead of 13-12, Ray and Margaret won five consecutive ends to lead 19-12 and although Alan and Jim fought back to close the gap to 18-19, Margaret and Ray were able to clinch victory with a couple of ones. Congratulations to Ray and Margaret, two of the longest serving members of the Club and deserving winners of the 2013 Chairman’s Shield.

Round Robin

15 people turn up for the Round Robin on Saturday 13th July.

It was one of the warmest days of the year. Three people sat out leaving 12 to play.

After over 2 hours playing the winners emerged.

Joint first with +13 were David Warrior and Alan Bond

Second was Steve Mann

And third was Joan Bond

PRESIDENT’S DAY

The Club’s first ever President’s Day was held last Sunday (30th June) and was a great success for the new President, Bill Nowell. The improved weather saw the event attract a record entry for a club singles competition of 37, with a good number of spectators also there to lend their support.
In the top half of the draw, Mark Rowlinson made comfortable progress to the semi-final with wins against Vera Groom (21-11), Jayne Eustace (21-12) and Judith Farrell (21-13). He faced tough opposition in the semi-final in the form of Mike Dunlop who had successfully negotiated three tough games, narrowly defeating Jim Finnimore (21-18), Steve Mann (21-19) and John Stennett (21-17). These close games must have taken their toll on Mike, however, as Mark won through to the final with an easier than expected 21-13 victory.
The bottom half of the draw saw Alex Rimmer reach his second final of the season after a series of closely fought contests. Having defeated Don Rimmer 21-10 in the 1st Round, Alex then had to go the distance against Brian Jones, Leo Tobin and Eagles player John Unsworth, winning all three games 21-20.
In the final, Alex, with an advantage on the handicapping of +4, established an early lead, winning four consecutive ends to lead 11-6. When Alex scored back-to-back 2s at the 16th and 17th ends to take the score to 17-9, it looked to be only a matter of time before he clinched victory. However, Mark was able to take the next four ends to narrow the gap to 15-17 and although Alex scored a couple of singles to go within two chalks of the title, Mark strung another four consecutive ends together to take the 2013 President’s Cup, winning 21-19.
A plate competition was held for those players who had lost their first game and this was won by Bill Nowell who beat Richard Rawcliffe 15-10 in the final.
The Committee would like to thank Irene Nowell, Pat Jones and Betty Plant for providing the refreshments and organising a raffle. An impressive total of £143 was raised on the day which will go towards club funds.
Congratulations to our President, Bill Nowell, on a successful and enjoyable day.

JUNE ROUND ROBIN

JUNE ROUND ROBIN
23 players took part in the June Round Robin on Saturday, including several new members participating in their first Club event. In joint 2nd place with an aggregate of +14 were Alan Bond and Dave White but with a score of +15, the winner was Len Mann.
Members are reminded that the next Club competition will the President’s Cup, which will be held on Sunday 30th June. Please come along and support Bill Nowell in his first year as Club President. The competition will start at 1.00pm and there will be a consolation event for 1st Round losers.

VICE-PRESIDENTS TROPHY – 8TH JUNE 2013
On a fine Saturday afternoon, 28 members took part in the inaugural running of the Vice-Presidents Trophy, a pairs competition in which partners are drawn for randomly.
Some strong pairings were formed and in the top half the draw, Eagles and Kestrels player Dave Pennington was drawn to play with a new member for this season, Fred Mitchell. The pairing seemd to work well as Dave and Fred reached the semi-final with wins against Joe Parker and Dorothy Mitchell (21-10) and the strongly fancied pair of Mike Dunlop and Les Miller (21-16). In the semi-final, they faced a tough battle with Alan Bond and another new member, Colin MacKenzie, but eventually won 21-19 to reach the final.
In the bottom half of the draw, Brian Jones and Steve Mann had received a bye in the 1st Round, before reaching the semi-final by defeating John Stennett and Les Butterworth 21-13. In the semi-final they were up against the strong pairing of Bill Nowell and Pat Miller. This was another close encounter but in the end it was Brian and Steve who won through by a 21-18 margin.
In the final, Brian and Steve started strongly and appeared to be cruising to victory as they led 15-8 and 18-11. However, Dave Pennington’s experience came to the fore as he and Fred scored 8 chalks in 4 ends, including a 4 and a 3. At this stage, Dave and Fred must have fancied their chances of the clinching victory but Brian and Steve mangaged to find the 2 chalks needed to win an excellent final 21-19.

The Plate competition for 1st Round losers was won by Leo Tobin and Len Mann, who beat George Hitchmough and Don Parish 15-9 in the final.
Members are reminded that the Club will be holding a Round Robin this Saturday 15th June, starting at 2.00pm. All are welcome to come along for an sociable and enjoyable afternoon of bowling.”

CORONATION CUP

CORONATION CUP
16 members turned up in dreadful weather conditions last Sunday to compete for the Coronation Cup, the Club’s second singles handicap of the season.
In the top half of the draw, Sue Davies progressed to the semi-finals with good wins against Jason Chapman and John Stennett. Her opponent in the last four was Ospreys captain Kevin Leddy, who had to concede a handicap of 6. Kevin had reached this stage of the competition with victories against Jim Finnimore and Mark Eustace but found it difficult to claw back Sue’s six start advantage. Despite closing the gap to 9-10, Sue found her form and won 8 out of 10 ends to reach the final with a 21-12 success.
The bottom half of the draw saw Ted Moule reach the final with wins against Will Roddan, George Hitchmough and in the semi-final, Alex Rimmer. The first of these wins saw Ted stage a remarkable fightback from 20-13 down against Will to win  21-20. Ted’s semi-final against Alex was also a close affair, with Ted eventually going through 21-19.
Ted got off to the better start in the final, winning the first three ends and scoring four 2s in the first 7 ends to establish a 13-9 advantage. Sue was able to take the next two ends to close the gap to 12-13 but Ted won the next four ends to lead 18-12. Sue rallied with a couple of 2s to set up an exciting finish but Ted was able to score three chalks required to take the 2013 Coronation Cup, the final score being 21-16.
Many thanks to those members who supported this competition despite the poor weather. Hopefully, the weather will have improved in time for the Club’s next event on Bank Holiday Monday, 27th May, which will be a Round Robin starting at 2.00pm.
Members should note that the green will be unavailable for use this Sunday, 19th May from 10.30am as the Club is hosting the Churchtown Conservative Club’s Chairman’s Cup pairs competition. However, any spectators would be more than welcome to attend.

MAY ROUND ROBIN RESULTS
“The improved Bank Holiday weekend weather saw 24 members take part in the Club’s May Round Robin on Saturday. In 4th place, with a score of +13 was Ray Bladen. Mark Eustace was 3rd on +19, just behind George Morris on +21. The winner, however, was Eagles player John Unsworth, who won all three of his games to finish with an aggregate of +23.
The next event in the Club’s busy calendar is to be held this Sunday, 12th May, when members will compete for the Coronation Cup, starting at 1.00pm. If there is sufficient demand, a consolation plate competition will be run for those unlucky enough to lose in their first game in the main competition.”

ROUND ROBINS

MAY ROUND ROBIN
“Members are reminded that the Club will be holding a Round Robin tomorrow, Saturday 4th May, starting at 2.00pm.
This is the first time the Club has held a Round Robin on a Saturday and replaces the Bank Holiday event on this occasion.
The dates for future Round Robins are as follows :-
Spring Bank Holiday Monday, 27th May, 2.00pm
Saturday 15th June, 2.00pm
Saturday 13th July, 2.00pm
August Bank Holiday, Monday 26th August, 2.00pm
There is also a Social Round Robin every Tuesday, commencing at 10.00am. All members are welcome to attend these weekly events, which are hosted by Jim Finnimore.”
