Vice Presidents Pairs

VICE-PRESIDENTS PAIRS

There was a good turnout of 34 members for the Vice-Presidents Pairs at the weekend, which saw Kez Adams and Fergal Wright continue their good form to take the title. They had reached the semi-final with wins against Pat Lough and Roger Van Beever (21-6) and John Hughes and John McCabe (21-13). Their semi-final against Ali Adams and Steve McManus proved to be one of the games of the day as both pairs produced some high-quality bowling. In a close match, Kez and Fergal narrowly won through to the final with a 21-18 win.

In the bottom half of the draw, Andy Draper and Kevin Leddy reached the semi-final with wins against George Hitchmough and Peter Smith (21-5) and Mike Milne and John Unsworth (21-15). Their semi-final opponents were Debbie Barnes and Pat McArthur, who had two good wins to reach this stage. This was another close match with Andy and Kevin surviving a scare to win through 21-17.

In the final, Andy and Kevin started strongly and a 3 at the second end helped them into an 8-3 lead. From here though, Kez and Fergal put a run together to win the next nine ends, including a four at the tenth end to take a commanding 18-8 lead. Although Andy and Kevin hit back with a 3 and two singles to narrow the gap to 13-18, three chalks in the next two ends saw Kez and Fergal claim victory.

Congratulations to all four finalists on excellent performances throughout the day. This was Kez’s second Hesketh competition win of the season, having won the Spring Pairs with Janice Hobson. For Fergal, it was also his second win of the season, having won the Club’s Champion of Champions event.

Many thanks to our Vice-President, John Unsworth, who presented the trophy and prize money to the successful players.

Blowick Cup Champion of Champions

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

The Club’s busy Bank Holiday weekend continued on Sunday when the second staging of our Champion of Champions took place. This is an invitational singles event for  members who won a club competition or team merit the previous season. The trophy played for is the “Blowick Cup”, previously played for at the old Blowick Hotel Bowling Club.

Reigning champion Chris Porter was determined to retain the title and played well to reach the final with wins against Jim Halsall (21-20), Roger Van Beever (21-15) and Dave Bedford (21-11). His opponent in the final was the previous day’s Open Singles finalist, Fergal Wright, who had wins against Mike Milne (21-17), Phil Kitchen (21-12) and Peter Smith (21-17).

Chris started strongly in the final and scored three 2s in the first seven ends to open up an 8-2 lead. Chris kept the advantage and led 13-10 but Fergal kept chipping away with singles to lead 19-18. A double for Chris made him favourite at 20-19 but Fergal was able to count the two singles required to win an excellent final 21-20.

WINNER Fergal Wright

Many thanks to this year’s new Club President, Peter Smith, who was on hand to present the trophy and prize money.

OPEN SINGLES

OPEN SINGLES 2022Saturday saw a full field of 32 players competing for the Club’s 2022 Open Singles title, this year generously sponsored by the Birkdale Insurance Group and we thank them for their support. The increased prize money on offer attracted a good field, with some of the top bowlers in the area taking part.
Despite the quality of the opposition, the final turned out to be a battle between two of our own members, as Darren Edgerley took on Fergal Wright for the £200 first prize. In a close final, Darren came out on top, the final score being 21-17. Congratulations to both on excellent performances throughout the day.

WINNER 2022 DARREN EDGERLEY
RUNNER UP 2022 FERGAL WRIGHT

Many thanks to all those who supported the event on the day and helped out with marking and measuring. In particular, special thanks to Lynne Smith, Lynn Burrow and Sue Wignall for their work in providing refreshments.
