SPRING PAIRS

Despite the poor weather, 26 members and guests  braved the cold and showery conditions to compete in The Spring Pairs competition on Sunday 15th May. For this event, pairs are drawn at random and some strong pairings were formed.
In the top half of the draw, the highlight of the quarter-finals was an “all Kelly affair” between Alan Kelly and Cath Greenwood and Mike Dunlop and Shirley Kelly. This was a very tight game with Shirley coming up with a winning final bowl to take the game 21-20. Mike and and Shirley went on to reach the final with a surprisingly comfortable 21-9 victory against the fancied pair of Mark Eustace and Marlene Dobb.
In the bottom half of the draw, the “bookies favourites” were Keith Jones and Margaret Langley but they had a tough quarter-final encounter with Cliff Jennings and Ray Lowe, eventually winning through by a narrow 21-19 margin. They then reached the final with a 21-11 success against Pat Higgins and Joan Wellard.
The final saw Mike and Shirley get off to a flyer to take a 14-2 lead but Keith and Margaret were able to use all their experience of playing on the Hesketh Arms green to eventually win the final 21-16.
Many thanks to all those who turned out to support this event on such a poor afternoon. The next club event will be a Round Robin on Bank Holiday Monday 30th May starting at 2.00pm
