Chairmans Shield

CHAIRMAN’S SHIELD 2019

An impressive turnout of 32 members took part in the Chairman’s Shield on Saturday. For the first time, a club pairs was played on a non-random basis, meaning that members were able to enter the competition with a partner of their own choice. It is pleasing to note that the new format attracted several members who aren’t regulars at the Club’s internal tournaments. We hope to see them again at future events.

The top half of the draw saw the Harriers / Ospreys pairing of Jason Chapman and Mark Rowlinson in fine form, enjoying comfortable wins against Kez Adamas & Bill Bloor (21-13), Dave and Sue White (21-12) and in the semi-final, Graham Meadow & John Unsworth (21-8). Their opponents in the final were Barry Lowe and Richard Rawcliffe from the Kestrels. Having reached the semi-finals with wins against Janice Hobson and Ken Rimmer (21-17) and Norman Simpson and Ray Sutton (21-10), they achieved a notable semi-final victory against the Eagles pairing of Chris Harding and Jon Roberts (21-13).

The early stages of the final were dominated by Barry and Richard as they won six out of the first eight ends to establish a 12-6 lead. A three at the next end saw Jason and Mark back within touching distance but four at the 10th end saw the Kestrels pair take a commanding 16-9 lead, which they were able to maintain to take the game 21-11. Congratulations to both players but especially to Barry on claiming his first competition win at the Hesketh. Well done also to Jason and Mark on a good run to the final.

The Plate competition was won by Sue Davies and George Hitchmough with a 15-9 win in the final against Jeff Brown and Roger Van Beever.

The busy season at the Club continues next Sunday, 21st July, when we will be holding the President’s Cup. We hope to see a big turnout to support  Sue Davies in her second year as Club President. Please not that this competition will start at the earlier time of 11.00 am (registration up until 10.45 am).

Refreshments will be available on the day and donations of raffle prizes would be greatly appreciate

The home representatives were Chris Porter and Fergal Wright and they won 21-14 and 21-18 respectively. Vice Presidents Pairs

VICE-PRESIDENTS PAIRS TROPHY 2019
14 pairs took part in the Vice-Presidents Pairs on Sunday as Peter Croston and Norman Simpson both claimed their first competition win at the Hesketh Arms. Having started with a 21-9 win against Norma White and Brian Jones, they beat the strong pairing of Jim Halsall and Noel Morgans 21-13 in the semi-final.
Their opponents in the final were Sue Davies and Fergal Wright, a two time winner of this competition. Sue and Fergal had reached the semi-final stage with wins against Barry McArthur and Tony Wakefield (21-14) and George Hitchmough and Laurie Townson (21-15). The semi-final was a dramatic tussle against Pat McArthur and Bill Nowell, who seemed to be heading for the final as they led 20-9. Sue and Fergal fought back and a four at the sixteenth end put them back in contention. Despite some good attempts, Pat and Bill were unable to find the chalk they needed and it was Sue and Fergal who progressed to the final.
The final was just as dramatic as Sue and Fergal appeared to be cruising to victory leading 18-11, helped by counting three 3s. Peter and Norman weren’t going to concede without a fight and won six consecutive ends to level the final at 18 across. When Sue and Fergal then counted two to take them to all but and Fergal put up a good lead at the next end it appeared to be all over but Peter then produced two excellent bowls to take the score to all but across. A good lead at the next end was enough to see Peter and Norman take the game 21-20. Congratulations to all four finalists on providing one of the best finals we have seen in a Hesketh Arms’ club competition.
The plate competition was won by Mike Dunlop and Derek Wignall with a 15-12 win against Alex Rimmer and Roger Van Beever.

Open Singles 2019

OPEN SINGLES 2019
The Club held it’s third Open Singles on Saturday and the competition attracted a full field of 32, with players coming from Fylde, Burnley, Goldborne and Liverpool to compete with local bowlers for the first prize of £120.
Andy Draper from Fleetwood Hesketh reached the final in the top half of the draw. Having come from behind against Steve McManus in the 1st Round, be overcame homester Len Southworth and David Walker from Burnley, before defeating another Hesketh Arms’ player, Wayne Graham, in the semi-final.
Andy’s opponent in the final was Fergal Wright, who had started with a first round win against team-mate Liam Gregson, before knocking out last year’s winner Ray Bevington of Goldborne Sports. He then defeated another Hesketh player, Dave Gordon, before progressing to the final with a 21-17 win against Alan Waterworth of Goldborne in the semi-final.
Home green knowledge might have made Fergal favourite to win the decider but Andy had played well all day and continued this form in the final. The early stages proved to be one-sided as Andy built up a commanding lead before Fergal clawed a few chalks back. Andy’s form was too good on the day and he was able to claim first prize, the final score being 21-11. Congratulations to both players on reaching the final but in particular to Andy Draper on winning this competition for the first time.
Many thanks to all those who supported this event and helped with marking and measuring. Special thanks also go to Lynne Smith and Sue Wignall for the excellent job they did with the refreshments, which is greatly appreciated.
The Club’s next open will be the doubles in September. Watch out for details of this, which should be available soon.

Championship Cup and Ladies’ Championship

CHAMPIONSHIP CUP AND LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP 2019
Sunday 2nd June saw members take part in the latest club event when we were competing for the Championship Cup (men’s singles) and for the second time, the Ladies’ Championship.
In the Championship Cup, Wayne Graham emerged from a strong top half of the draw with fairly comfortable wins against Dave White (21-11), Peter Smith (21-10) and in the semi-final, Jason Wright (21-15). Wayne’s opponent in the final was Derek Wignall, who had three tough games but won through with victories against Brian Jones (21-14), Ken Rimmer (21-15) and Mike Dunlop (21-20). The final was close all the way through, with never more than three chalks in it but when Wayne pulled clear to lead 19-15 it appeared to be Wayne’s day. Derek fought back, however, to level at 20 across but was unable to find the lead he needed and it was Wayne who took the final end to claim his first Hesketh Arms singles title. Congratulations to Wayne and also to Derek on reaching his first final.
The Ladies’ Championship saw surprise early exits for two of the favourites, Janice Hobson and holder Sue Davies and it was Lynne Smith and Pat McArthur who contested the final. The early stages of the final were close, with Pat leading 10-8 after eight ends but four 2s in five ends saw Pat take an unassailable lead to take the second Ladies’ Championship. This was Pat’s first singles win at the Hesketh Arms, having previously won the Spring Pairs and Chairman’s Shield. Congratulations to Lynne on reaching her first main final at the Hesketh.

A joint plate competition was held and this was won by Peter Croston with a narrow 15-14 win against Roger Van Beever in the final.

Spring Pairs 2019

SPRING PAIRS 2019

Congratulations to Mike Dunlop and Les Miller on winning the Spring Pairs, the first of the Club’s four doubles competitions.

Mike and Les had a difficult start to the afternoon, facing the strong pairing of Brian Jones and Richard Rawcliffe in the 1st Round. After a tough contest, it was Mike and Les who edged the game 21-19, before progressing to the final with wins against Mike Milne and Sue Wignall (21-14) and Lynn Burrow and Ken Rimmer (21-10).

In the bottom half of the draw, Chris Harding and Dave White had notable wins against the strongly fancied pair of Peter Croston and Pat McArthur (21-15) and in the semi-final, Kevin Leddy and Sue White (21-16).

Mike and Les got off to a flying start in the final, scoring doubles at the first three ends to lead 10-4. Chris and Dave fought back to level at 10-10 but Mike and Les were able to win 6 out of the next 7 ends to establish an 18-11 lead which Chris and Dave were unable to pull back, the final score being 21-14. This was Mike’s sixth competition win at the Hesketh Arms and Les’s second, having won the Chairman’s Shield back in 2011.

The Plate competition was won by Barry McArthur and Peter Smith, winning the final 15-10 against Bill Bloor and Lynne Smith.

The next competition day at the Club will be on Sunday 2nd June, when members will compete for the Championship Cup (a men’s singles handicap) and the Ladies’ Championship. A joint plate competition will be run for those who lose their first game in the main competitions. Please report by 11.45 am for a 12 noon start.
