END-OF-SEASON NEWS – SEPTEMBER 2016
SEPTEMBER ROUND ROBIN
The final weekend event of the season took place on Sunday and was attended by 24 members. Dave Bedford took 4th place with an aggregate of +10. There was a tie for 2nd place with John Catherall and Jim Halsall both finishing on +16 but the clear winner was John Hughes with a score of +20.
AUGHTON LEAGUE
Congratulations to the Hesketh Hawks who recently won the Aughton League’s 3rd Division Mini-League Cup final. This capped a fine season for the Club in this league as the Kestrels ended the season as 2nd Division champions.
TUESDAY AND FRIDAY ROUND ROBINS
Many thanks once again to Jim Finnimore for all his work in running the regular Tuesday and Friday morning Round Robins. These events are extremely popular and give our members the opportunity to enjoy regular social bowling. The final session of 2016 will take place on Friday 30th September, starting at 10.00am.
GREEN CLOSURE
Members are reminded that the green will be closed after Sunday 2nd October to enable the essential end-of-season maintenance work to take place.
AWARDS EVENING
Don’t forget to book your tickets for Club’s popular Awards Evening, which will take place at the Churchtown Conservative Club on Saturday 5th November, starting at 7.30pm. In addition to the presentation of awards, there will be a quiz, bingo and refreshments. To order tickets, please contact any committee member or team captain.
CHAMPIONSHIP CUP 2016
The final club handicap took place on Sunday and attracted an impressive turnout of 29 players.
In the top half on the draw, John Hughes made fairly comfortable progress to the semi-final with wins against Roger Van Beever (21-12), Bill Nowell (21-15) and Luke Dawes (21-9). The semi-final was to be a tough test for John, however, as his opponent was Eagles team mate Keith Jones, making his first appearance in a club competition for a number of years. Keith started well and led 10-4 and 13-9 but John hit back with back-to-back 2s to draw level and was able to progress to the final with a narrow 21-18 victory.
The bottom half of the draw saw Club President, Ray Sutton, battle his way to final with three close wins against Noel Morgans (21-20), Mike Dunlop (21-18) and in the semi-final, Brian Jones (21-19). These tough games probably proved to be a disadvantage to Ray in the final, which was dominated by John Hughes, who scored 9 twos in securing the 2016 Championship Cup with a 21-9 win. Congratulations to John on winning his first Hesketh Arms club event and to Ray on some good performances throughout the competition.
A consolation event was held and was won by Richard Rawcliffe with a 15-7 success against Derek Wignall in the final.
Many thanks to all the members who have supported the club’s competitions in 2016. These events have attracted a total of 213 entries, which is a record number and we look forward to another enjoyable season in 2017.
The final weekend event of the season will take place on Sunday 25th September and will be a Round Robin, starting at 2.00pm.

BERNARD O’MALLEY TROPHY – JUNIOR OPEN SINGLES
Saturday saw the Hesketh Arms Bowling Club welcome 18 junior bowlers to Churchtown for the second staging of the Bernard O’Malley Trophy. This is a Junior Open Singles and attracted entries from all over the North West, including for the first time, Blackburn and Rochdale.
Despite the inclement weather conditions, the standard of bowling throughout the day was extremely high and there were some keenly contested games. However, the final was to be between two home players, Kyle Dawes and Fergal Wright. Kyle led for much of the final and at 18-15 up looked to be closing in on victory but Fergal was determined to retain the title he won last year and found his form at the right time to run out a 21-18 winner. Congratulations to both players on providing a fitting finale to an excellent competition and thanks to all the competitors for the part they played in making the day a success in spite of the poor weather.
Special thanks must go to Graham Pickavance, our referee for the day, who gave his time freely to help with the smooth running of this event.
Finally, thank you to all those who helped with measuring and marking on the day and to the Committee of the Club for staging this tournament in recognition of all the support given to the Club by our Vice-President, Mr. Bernard O’Malley.

FRIENDLY V. EMMANUEL BOWLING CLUB
Saturday saw a team from the Hesketh Arms visit Emmanuel Bowling Club for the first time to play a friendly fixture for the Challenge Shield. Last season, Emmanuel had taken on a team representing the Churchtown Conservative Club at the Hesketh Arms and emerged victorious, so the Hesketh team were keen to bring the Shield back home.
16 players from the Hesketh attended on the day and the games were played in pairs. There were some close matches during the afternoon but it was a narrow 15-14 win by Chris Harding and John Unsworth which secured a 6-4 win for the Hesketh side.
After the bowling, the players retired to the Church Hall to enjoy a buffet provided by the hosts and the Chairman of Emmanuel Bowling Club, Kath Young, presented the Shield to the Hesketh Arms Chairman, Chris Harding. On behalf of the Hesketh, Chris thanked Emmanuel for their hospitality throughout the afternoon and looked forward to welcoming Emmanuel back to the Hesketh for a re-match in 2017.
CHAIRMAN’S SHIELD
A busy weekend continued on Sunday when 18 pairs competed for the Chairman’s Shield, the Club’s third and final random pairs competition of the season.
After some good games in the early rounds, the final saw the pairing of Mike Dunlop and Mark Sutton take on Margaret Langley and Peter Smith. Margaret and Peter had both won pairs competitions with different partners at the Hesketh this season, so had been tipped all afternoon to be in contention but it was Mike and Mark who started the final strongly. They won 6 out of the first 8 ends to lead 12-6 and then a further 4 ends out of 5 to take them to the brink of victory at 20-10. Although Margaret and Peter did their best to stage a comeback, scoring 6 chalks to close the gap to 16-20, it wasn’t to be and Mike and Mark deservedly took the 2016 Chairman’s Shield with a 21-16 win.
Congratulations to both Mike and Mark, but in particular to Mark Sutton on his first tournament win.
A consolation event was held and this was won by Norman Simpson and Ray Sutton, overcoming Barry McArthur and Jim Finnimore in the final.
At the end of the afternoon, the presentations were made by Chairman, Chris Harding and President, Ray Sutton.
Photographs will be posted when received.
Members are reminded that the final events of the season will be held in September :-
Sunday 11th September – The Championship Cup (singles handicap) – 12.00pm start
