OPEN DOUBLES – BERNARD O’MALLEY TROPHY
This Sunday, 4th September, the club will be holding the annual Open Doubles competition for the Bernard O’Malley Vice-Presidents Trophy. There are still places available at 10.00 am and 10.45 am and it would be pleasing if we can fill these places to make it a really good competition and a fitting tribute to the club’s Honorary Vice-President, who does so much to support the club. Anyone interested in taking one of the remaining places should contact Mike Milne (07752352065) or Chris Harding (07761733024).
We would be grateful if as many members as possible could come down on the day to assist with the running of the competition. Help will be required with marking, measuring and starting games off. All support from members will be greatly appreciated.

LEAGUE SUCCESS
As the various local leagues come to the end of the regular season, it is pleasing to report that three of our teams have won their respective championships.
In the Burscough League, the Vultures won the 1st Division Championship, finishing 19 points clear of last year’s champions, Banks St. Stephen’s.

In the 2nd Division, the Ospreys made it a double for the Club by also finishing as champions. Well done to captains Chris Harding and Mark Rowlinson and all the players in both teams.

There was more success for the Club in the Southport Parks League, with the Kites winning the 1st Division by a single point from runners-up Scarisbrick Bowling Club. The team is pictured below celebrating in the Conservative Club following a 6-4 win against the Falkland Road side in a last day decider.

SOUTHPORT FEDERATION
The Southport Federation team played Harrogate in their latest fixture and claimed an 18 points to 14 win. The home leg was played at the Hesketh Arms and Southport continued their impressive record at the Hesketh, winning 8 of the 12 games and gaining a convincing 73 chalk aggregate advantage. This was enough to win the four points for the overall aggregate as the away team lost by just 48 at Bilton WMC, winning four of the twelve games.
Of the Hesketh Arms’ players, there were excellent wins for Fergal Wright (21-11) and Darren Edgerley (21-12) at home, whilst Andy Draper won 21-18 away.

LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP AND CORONATION CUP
LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIPCongratulations to Debbie Barnes on overcoming some tough competition to win the Ladies’ Championship on Saturday. The early stages of this event are played using a group format and the three group winners, progressing to the semi-finals, were Pat McArthur, Noreen Lewis and Sue Davies. They were joined in the last four by Debbie, who had finished runner-up to Sue Davies in Group C, having defeated reigning champion Sue Andersen 15-10. This was enough to claim the last semi-final place as the best of the runners-up.
The semi-finals saw Noreen Lewis beat previous winner Sue Davies 15-8 and Debbie won a close match with two-time winner Pat McArthur 15-13. In a good final, which could have gone either way, Debbie was able to adapt to the wet conditions to take the title with a 15-11 win. This was Debbie’s first competition win, having joined the club last season after taking part in the Bowls for Health sessions.
Many thanks to all those who took part in this event despite the poor weather conditions and also to those who came down and helped with marking cards and measuring.

CORONATION CUPThe Coronation Cup, which has been played throughout the season, was completed on Sunday with the semi-finals and final taking place in greatly improved weather conditions.
The semi-final in the top half of the draw was between Chris Porter and Darren Edgerley. Despite having to concede a handicap of four chalks and trailing 16-6 and 19-13, Chris drew level at 19 across, only for Darren to claim the two singles he needed to progress to the final. In the other semi-final, Peter Smith was in fine form and he was able to defeat his Burscough League captain Mark Rowlinson 21-13.
The final saw Peter continue his excellent form and he won eight of the first ten ends to lead 16-6. Darren then won the next six ends, including four 2s to draw level at 16-16, eventually winning an exciting game 21-19.

Congratulations to all four players on providing an enjoyable finals day to the competition but in particular to Darren on his fourth competition win of the season, having previously won the Open Singles, the Rose Bowl and the Championship Cup.
