SPRING PAIRS 2019

Congratulations to Mike Dunlop and Les Miller on winning the Spring Pairs, the first of the Club’s four doubles competitions.

Mike and Les had a difficult start to the afternoon, facing the strong pairing of Brian Jones and Richard Rawcliffe in the 1st Round. After a tough contest, it was Mike and Les who edged the game 21-19, before progressing to the final with wins against Mike Milne and Sue Wignall (21-14) and Lynn Burrow and Ken Rimmer (21-10).

In the bottom half of the draw, Chris Harding and Dave White had notable wins against the strongly fancied pair of Peter Croston and Pat McArthur (21-15) and in the semi-final, Kevin Leddy and Sue White (21-16).

Mike and Les got off to a flying start in the final, scoring doubles at the first three ends to lead 10-4. Chris and Dave fought back to level at 10-10 but Mike and Les were able to win 6 out of the next 7 ends to establish an 18-11 lead which Chris and Dave were unable to pull back, the final score being 21-14. This was Mike’s sixth competition win at the Hesketh Arms and Les’s second, having won the Chairman’s Shield back in 2011.

The Plate competition was won by Barry McArthur and Peter Smith, winning the final 15-10 against Bill Bloor and Lynne Smith.

The next competition day at the Club will be on Sunday 2nd June, when members will compete for the Championship Cup (a men’s singles handicap) and the Ladies’ Championship. A joint plate competition will be run for those who lose their first game in the main competitions. Please report by 11.45 am for a 12 noon start.

SPRING PAIRS

The next club competition will be take place on Saturday 11^th May, when members will compete for the Spring Pairs Trophy. This will be a random doubles event, with pairings being drawn on the day. Please report by 11.45 am for a prompt 12 noon start.

SOUTHPORT CHAMPIONS TROPHY

Congratulations to Chris Porter, who won the Southport Champions Trophy, held at the Hesketh Arms on Sunday 7^th April, with a 21-16 victory in the final against Lisa Smith of Scarisbrick NSC. 

SOUTHPORT FEDERATION

The first Southport Federation fixture of the season will take place on Sunday 28^th April, when the team take on Rochdale Ladies. The home leg is being played at Scarisbrick Bowling Club, starting at 2.00 pm.

Several Hesketh Arms players will be representing Southport. Alistair, Kez and Arthur Adams, Chris Porter and Fergal Wright have all been selected to play at Falkland Road. Mike Milne, Tony Wakefield and Mark Wilde will be in the away twelve travelling to Rochdale.

Spectators will be welcome as the team looks to get their fourth Federation season off to a good start.

TROPHY ENGRAVING

If anyone is holding a main club trophy or plate, please could they be returned to Mike Milne so that they can engraved ready for presentation at this year’s events.

CAR PARKING

Members and guests are reminded that when using the Hesketh Arms car park, the car registration number needs to be entered in the console situated at the bar inside the pub. Failure to do this will result in a charge being made to the owner of the car.

OPEN SINGLES

The Club will be holding an Open Singles on Saturday 15^th June, with start times at 10.00am, 10.45am, 11.30am and 12.15pm. The entry fee is £10, with the winner receiving £120 (total prize money £320) For further details or to enter please contact :-

ROSE BOWL 2019
The first club competition of the season took place on Sunday when 23 members braved the chilly conditions to take part in the Rose Bowl, a singles handicap.
In the top half of the draw, Terry Corfield negotiated a tricky route to the final by defeating Wayne Graham (21-12), Kez Adams (21-17) and in the semi-final, the in-form Dave White (21-13). Terry’s opponent in the final was his Harriers team-mate Peter Croston, who had overcome Laurie Townson (21-11), Alex Rimmer (21-12) and Ken Rimmer (21-9).
The final was expected to be close but Terry continued his excellent form by winning 12 out of the first thirteen ends to establish a commanding 20-5 lead. Peter was able to stage a mini-revival by winning four consecutive ends but Terry scored the single chalk he needed to win the final 21-9. Congratulations to Terry on winning his first Hesketh Arms title.
A plate competition was run for those losing their first game and this was won by Club President Sue Davies with a 15-10 win against Lynne Smith in the final.
Members are reminded that the next internal competition will be the Spring Pairs, which will take place on Saturday 11th May, starting at 12 noon. Pairings will be drawn randomly on the day – please register by 11.45 am to ensure a prompt start.

OPENING ROUND ROBIN 

The first club event of the season took place on Sunday when 24 members took part in a Round Robin. Fourth place went to Ken Rimmer with a score of +12. Wayne Graham and Len Southworth were joint second with +13 but the clear winner with an aggregate of +19 was Norman Simpson.

ROSE BOWL

The first club competition of 2019 will be held on Sunday 14^th April when we will be competing for the Rose Bowl. This is a singles handicap and will start at 12 noon. Please report by 11.45am to ensure a prompt start.

Social Membership – £25.00

Full Membership applies to those members playing for one or more of the league teams and includes the payment of league fees and cost of fixture books/cards.

The popular midweek Round Robins will commence on Tuesday 2^nd April. These events, hosted by Peter and Lynne Smith, will then take place every Tuesday and Friday throughout the season, commencing at 10.00 am. Please arrive in good time to allow the draw to take place. These friendly sessions are ideal for new and experienced bowlers alike and are an excellent way of meeting other club members.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Many thanks to all those who attended the Club’s AGM, held on Monday 18th February at the Churchtown Conservative Club. We are grateful to the Conservative Club for allowing us to use their excellent facilities.

The meeting concluded with the announcement that Bill Nowell and Ray Sutton had been granted Honorary Life Membership of the Club in recognition of their longstanding and loyal service, both having been team captains and served on the Committee. Bill was Club President in 2013/2014 and Ray in 2015/2016. Congratulations to both on this well-deserved honour.

The green will be open to members from Saturday 30th March.
