FROM THE ARCHIVE 1 – 2007

As we are unable to bowl at the present time, we thought it was an opportunity to take a look back at some of our club competitions from years gone by.

2006 had been a difficult year for the club, with a membership of fewer than 40 bowlers and just two teams playing in the Southport LV League. A fire towards the end of the year caused serious structural damage to the clubhouse and destroyed equipment used to maintain the green and it’s surrounds. However, thanks to the efforts of a group of volunteers, funds were raised and repairs carried out.

The Club thus approached the 2007 season with a sense of renewed optimism and it was decided to try and resurrect the Club’s internal competitions, which had last been staged in 1996.

A start was made in 2007 by holding the President’s Cup. The competition attracted 21 entries, including several members of the Botanic Gardens Ladies’ teams, which were using the Hesketh Arms green at the time. It was perhaps fitting that the winner of this event was Jimmy Langley, who had done so much for the club over many years.
