NEWSLETTER – JUNE 2021

CHAIRMAN’S SHIELD

Congratulations to Kez Adams and Liam Gregson on winning the Chairman’s Shield at the weekend by overcoming Derek Ainsworth and Roy Webster in a high-quality final.

Kez and Liam had a tough draw in their first game against Vultures team-mates Kevin Leddy and Steve McManus and had to stage a comeback to win 21- 19. They followed this with wins against Janice Hobson and Derek Wignall (21-5) and Wayne Graham and Kevin McCormack (21-15).

Derek and Roy started off with a win against Darren Edgerley and John Hughes (21-15) before progressing to the final with comfortable wins against Jeff Brown and Kim Montgomery and in the semi-final, last year’s winners Brian Sutton and Dave White.

The final looked to be going in favour of Derek and Roy as they led 16-11 but Kez and Liam counted four to narrow the gap to 15-16 and a three at the sixteenth end helped them to a 21-17 victory.

LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP

The Club held it’s first ever Ladies’ Day at the weekend when fifteen members competed for the Ladies’ Championship. It was particularly pleasing to see several new recruits to the Club playing in their first competition, including some who have been taking part in the Bowls for Health sessions. We hope to see them again at future club events.

In a change of format, the early stages of the competition were played using a group system with the players divided into three groups of five, giving all participants four games. The three group winners qualified for the semi-finals along with the best runner-up. Sue Andersen, Margaret James and Chris McManus finished top of the three groups and the best runner-up was Sue Davies.

The semi-finals were won by Sue Andersen and former winner Sue Davies, who had a narrow 11-10 win against Chris McManus. In the final Sue Andersen started well, winning the first three ends and was able to maintain the good form she had been in all afternoon to claim the Ladies’ Championship for the first time with a 15-7 win.

COMPETITION NEWS 10 – CHAMPIONSHIP CUP REPORT

CHAMPIONSHIP CUP

Congratulations to Chris Porter on winning the Championship Cup with a 21-16 win against Derek Ainsworth in the final.

Having overcome Dave White in his first game, Chris had two good wins against Vultures team-mates Liam Gregson (21-16) and in the semi-final, Darren Edgerley by a narrow 21-20 scoreline. Derek reached the final with wins against Terry Corfield (21-5), Kevin McCormack (21-19), Mark Rowlinson (21-6) and in another close semi-final, Mike Milne (21-19).

The final started off with neither player dominating and after twelve ends Chris led 8-7 but three 2s put Chris in control of the match to lead 14-7. Although Derek was able to win five consecutive ends to close the gap to 15-17, CP was able to score the chalks required to claim the title. Chris had previously won this competition 33 years ago in 1988 !!!

COMPETITION NEWS 8 – SPRING PAIRS REPORT

SPRING PAIRS

Congratulations to Sue Andersen and Darren Edgerley on winning the Spring Pairs yesterday. This is a random doubles, with pairings drawn on the day and this was the second successive win for Sue in this competition, having won it with Jim Halsall in 2020. It is good to see Darren back bowling after a break of several years and this was his first competition win at the Hesketh Arms since winning the Rose Bowl in 2011.

Sue and Darren had reached the final after surviving a fightback by Janice Hobson and Fergal Wright in the semi-final to win 21-16 and their opponents in the final were the experienced pair of Dave Bedford and Keith Maiden. It also good to see Dave Bedford playing competitive bowls again and Keith returning to the Hesketh Arms after a break of fifteen years. Dave and Keith had reached the final with wins against Ray Sutton and Roy Webster (21-18), Roger Van Beever and Dave White (21-14) and Pat McArthur and John Unsworth (21-7).

The first half of the final was close with Dave and Keith leading 10-9 but Sue and Darren took control by scoring three 3s in five ends to run out convincing 21-10 winners.
