NEWSLETTER – JUNE 2021

MAGHULL & FORMBY MINI-LEAGUE

The Maghull and Formby Mini-League has now been completed and our two teams finished in good positions in their respective divisions.

The ‘A’ team (Owls) finished runners-up in Division 2, just one point behind 1st placed Scarisbrick NSC. Best individual performers for the Owls were Peter Smith with 11 wins out of 14 games played and Brian Sutton with 10 out of 13.

The ‘B’ team (Sparrowhawks) won eight out of their 12 matches to finish in a creditable 3rd place. For the Sparrowhawks, George Hitchmough had the most wins with 7 out of 8 games played. Janice Hobson and Dave White both won 6 out of 8.

Our two teams now move on to the Maghull League’s 2021 season of fixtures.

SOUTHPORT FEDERATION

On Sunday 27th June, the Southport Federation team take on Bradford ‘A’ in their first match of the season. The home leg is being played at the Hesketh Arms and any support or help with marking and measuring would be greatly appreciated.

The home players chosen to represent Southport at the Hesketh Arms are Kez Adams and Fergal Wright. Hesketh Arms’ players selected to play in the away leg are Ray Atkinson, Darren Edgerley, Chris Harding, Mike Milne and Mark Wilde.

Both legs start at 2.00 pm.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

On Sunday 11th July (12 pm start) we will be holding our inaugural Champion of Champions competition when members will be competing for the “Blowick Cup”. This will be an invitation event for winners of our club competitions or team merits in 2020. It is hoped that this will become an annual event in the Club’s calendar and will normally be scheduled for the beginning of the season. It was not possible to hold it in April this year due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

The “Blowick Cup” was acquired towards the end of last year and belonged to the old Blowick Hotel Bowling Club (the Blowick Hotel pub was situated where the Thatch and Thistle now stands).

The following members, who were successful in 2020 club competitions or team merits, have qualified to play in this competition :-
